Hands down, Egmont Key State Park offers the most breathtaking snorkeling in St Pete Beach. If you only plan on snorkeling near Tampa for a couple of hours, this accessible park is your best bet. Because Fort De Soto Park is a drivable destination, we recommend arriving early to avoid heavy traffic. If you venture further out, you’ll likely cross paths with barracudas and schools of small, colorful fish. Majestic, cheerful dolphins often leap into the clear sky within 100 feet of the shoreline. South Beach is perhaps the best spot to discover queen conches in the region, and the sea beds are home to several sea specimens, including sponges, crabs, and mollusks. While North Beach is an ultra-popular tourist destination with legions of live sand dollars along the sand bars, we recommend taking a dip at South Beach. In fact, many Tampa boat tours include several hours of self-guided snorkeling. Daily ferries run to two of these serene destinations (travelers can access Fort De Soto Park by car). shuttle.have lunch and then come back on the 2 p.m. Your parking pass is included in your fee, as are your snorkeling mask & a beach umbrella, and bags for shells (if you need any of those.) It is a little tough to carry all of that (and your cooler, or lunch/snacks ) around the bend to find a suitable spot on the beach, but we did appreciate the umbrella to sit & eat our lunch. I had considered booking us a day at Dolphin Cove in Orlando to swim with rays and snorkel.but our rustic version was just as fun! There are tons of birds, a little bit of exploring on the key too, and beautiful water & sand. There aren't a ton of fish to look at, but we did see a school of stingrays and a manatee.and tons and tons of sandollars. The snorkeling was fine, perfect for my kids. It was a fabulous day! Lots of beautiful shells and sand dollars. My children & I enjoyed a day on Shell Key via the shuttle this June.
